I just love our U-Pick Sewing Tutorial series!
Each month for over a year now I’ve shown you three things that I really want to make, and I let you pick your favorite because I simply don’t have time to write tutorials for them all.
Voting for our July U-Pick project ended yesterday. Do you want to see which project won?
You had 3 fun ideas to choose from… a clever drop in tote bag organizer, a modern fanny pack/sling bag/hip pouch (or whatever they call them these days!), or a comfy bed for your favorite pet.
Can you guess which project won the vote?
It was the sling bag!!
I have actually seen young people wearing bags like this like a cross body bag with the pouch on their chest. Part of me thought ‘that’s cool’ and the other part wanted to go show them the way it’s ‘supposed’ to be worn. But what do I know? I’m middle aged and we don’t dictate fashion.
Anyway, I think I’ll change the styling of this bag when I make my own version. The things that I’d like to sew differently are:
I want to leave off the color blocking and sew quilted fabric pieces with foam stabilizer like my Designer Zipper Bags and Triple Zip Pouch.
I think I might get rid of those flaps that stick out from the sides. Is there a purpose to those?
I’ve seen some pretty 1 1/4’’ or 1 1/2’’ elastic in shops lately it’s wide and soft. I might use that for the strap/belt part if I have hardware to match it. I’ll have to see.
The one thing that I definitely won’t change is the large zipper pocket in front and flat zipper pocket in the back. The secret pocket in the back is probably my favorite part!
Hopefully I'll have a fun hip bag ready to show you in about a week. Give me a week or so after that to draft the pattern. In the meantime, you might like my Ultimate List of Fast and Easy Bags to Sew.
