The kids had spring break last week, so what did we do??? Drop them off at grandma's house and take a parents-only vacation! Let me tell, you this was so needed! My hubby and I have not had that much time together since... ever! Our honeymoon (17 years ago) was only 3 days long, lol!
Our Eastern Caribbean cruise itinerary included a stop at St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The economy of these islands depends heavily on tourism, but sadly, this beautiful destination was hard hit by two hurricanes in 2017 (Irma and Maria). Now that the ports are open, the people here need our support more than ever. So in addition to our tour, we decided to do some shopping.
Of course, I was curious to see a fabric store!
I kept my cell phone in 'airplane mode' while on the cruise ship (to avoid international charges) but lucky for us, cell service in the U.S. Virgin Islands is not considered international - it's just like you are back at home in the U.S.! So I took it off airplane mode and used Google Maps to find The Fabric Store on Prindsens Gage.
I won't lie - it's a bit off the beaten path, but not too far if you are used to walking. It took us about 30 minutes to walk there from the pier in Charlotte Amalie. If you don't want to walk, you could easily ask a taxi driver to take you there.
I was disappointed in the selection of quilting fabrics, it was saved only by a nice rainbow of Kona solids.
But I did find a huge selection of satins and fancy garment fabrics.
If you want sparkles... you have come to the right place!
There is also a decent selection of zippers, basic thread, and notions along the walls. If you are lucky enough to be on a sewing cruise and need to get off the ship and find some notions, you just might be able to get what you need.
This gorgeous old stone staircase that we passed while walking back to the pier was one of my favorite sites on the island.
Those are my best show off photos for the week. I hope you got some sewing in!
Now it's your turn to show off what you've been sewing up. What have you been sewing up this week? Did you make something with one of my free sewing tutorials or patterns? I would love to see! Tag me on Instagram @sewcanshe.
