I'm so excited to go to the pool! I have a new pool chair cover with tons of pockets... every thing about it is just perfect.
I studied our inspiration photo so closely, picking out details that I'd like to keep and details that I could make better. :)
My must have features were:
- I wanted to start with a beach towel
- It had to fit the chair perfectly and not drape over on the sides.
- Both ends had to secure to the chair
- I wanted zippered pockets and slip pockets
- And of course, it had to fold up into an easy-to carry tote that could also hold other stuff
First I picked up this adorable pineapple towel at Target, and then I measured the chairs at our community pool (they are 22'' wide - like this chair at Lowes).
The length of the towel was fine but I had to adjust the width so that it wouldn't drape over the sides. I made it just 2'' wider than the chair to give good coverage but not drape.
Well, wouldn't it be awful if you dropped your phone in a pocket and it hit the ground? Eeek! I don't want a broken phone!
I wanted the pockets to be in the right places too, so before I sewed them on I took my chair cover to the pool to make sure that it fit and to see exactly where the pockets should be sewn.
But having the towel part of the cover fit the top of the chair posed a problem because if I sewed the top 'pocket' part the exact same size then it wouldn't fit because the chair frame is over 2'' thick. And what if your chair frame is even thicker?
What to do? Hmmm....
Use stretch fabric!
If you are hesitant (or even afraid) to use stretch fabric let that go right now! This is so easy and I will share tips to make it totally fool proof. Trust me.
Per my list of requirements - I sewed 1'' elastic to the bottom edge so it would secure to the bottom of the chair too.
Then when I got home I added both a zippered pocket and a slip pocket to each side.
Not to forget the tote part, I used terrycloth from the cut-off sides of the towel to make cute tie straps so it could fold up into a tote. You could also use new fabric, but I loved including that trim from the ends of the towel.
Now I need to sew another pool chair cover so I can bring a friend to the pool with me.
Just kidding - I need to sew one more so I can take pictures and write the tutorial for you!
Let me know in the comments what you think! Did I leave anything out?
