I know that many of you are teachers, sewing teachers even, so you might not agree with me - but it's really hard to teach a child to sew! Especially your own strong willed little girl who thinks she already knows everything about sewing because she's been watching you!
Lucky for us Laurie of Sew Surprised sent me a box full of everything to teach my strong willed little Cadie how to make a fun project.
Sew Surprised is a new subscription service meant to teach kids (or any beginners) to sew. Each box comes with one or more videos perfect for someone just starting out. Plus practice pages, fabric, notions, and everything else they will need to learn to sew.
My Cadie was thrilled to have such an exciting box come in the mail just for her. She got started right away on the practice sheets.
Then she turned on the video and watched it so she could make the cute envelope pillow cover that was the project for this box.
I was working on my own project nearby, so I listened and watched a bit when she let me look over her shoulder. At first I thought the video moved along pretty slowly, but then I noticed it was just perfect. Laurie was teaching her own daughter - starting from the very beginning.
The slow pace (and the fact that Laurie's daughter was younger than her) gave my little one such confidence, she completed the whole project herself! Well, except for the pinning. Cadie doesn't like pinning - I wonder where she got that from??? ;)
After she was done, she noticed I had box of pillow forms in my studio (I got them bulk from PillowFlex.com for this project and had a bunch leftover) so I said that she could make more pillow covers if she wanted.
For the rest of the afternoon, my daughter picked out fabric, I cut it, and she sewed envelope pillow covers:
And these... and even more after I took pictures!
Oh, and in case you noticed that the pillow covers don't have sharp corners: Cadie refused to use the point turner included in the box (and demonstrated on the video) because she thinks that sharp pillows will poke her in the eye while she is sleeping. Too cute! She gave one pillow to each of her siblings, to my husband and myself, and there are still more. Goodness!
I am so grateful for Laurie and her Sew Surprised box that taught Cadie so much. She has new skills and confidence - without any struggles from me! Click here to learn about Sew Surprised for someone you know!
