This may not be a traditional quilt block, but I think it's a new classic! Have you sewn a hashtag quilt block yet? It's so easy, you have to add this to your sampler quilt.
And... did you see the Jumbo Hashtag Quilt Pattern that I made with a bigger version of this blog? Don't miss it!
This 12'' hashtag quilt block is super fast! I stitched up 9 in an afternoon... perfect for a baby quilt.
In our Classic Blocks: Fresh Fabric sewalong this month someone will win this beautiful little bundle that has 9 fat quarters of Sundaland Jungle from Blend Fabrics. All you'll need to do to enter is sew up one Hashtag Quilt Block (or more) and upload a picture below.
Are you ready? I sewed each of my blocks with only two fabrics, one print and one solid (Kona Cotton Snow). Feel free to use any combination of fabrics if you are sewing along with us.
How to sew a Hashtag Quilt Block
All seam allowances are 1/4''. Finished block size: 12''.
Note: I designed this block with a 'slash and insert' method in mind. I started with a 9 1/2'' block of background fabric and after inserting 4 strips, the block was 12 1/2'' (12'' finished). For subsequent blocks I realized it would be much faster to start with background strips instead of a square (I cut everything with my Accuquilt Go! using the 2 1/2'' and 3 1/2'' strip dies). You can still start with a 9 1/2'' square if you want to, and then cut it into the specified strips below.
From the background fabric, cut:
- 2 strips 3 1/2'' x 9 1/2''
- 1 strip 2 1/2'' x 9 1/2''
From print fabric, cut:
- 2 strips 2 1/2'' x 9 1/2''
- 2 strips 2 1/2'' x 12 1/2''
Arrange the 9 1/2'' long strips as seen above, with the 3 1/2'' wide strips on the ends and the white 2 1/2'' x 9 1/2'' strip in the middle. Sew them together to make a 9 1/2'' tall x 12 1/2'' wide block.
Use your rotary cutter and ruler to slash the block into three pieces: two 3 1/2'' x 12 1/2'' strips (on the top and bottom) and one 2 1/2'' x 12 1/2'' strip (in the middle).
Insert the remaining 2 1/2'' x 12 1/2'' strips and sew the block back together.
Tip: To ensure that the vertical lines in your hashtag line up, fold the strips in half to find the center and make a crease. Then match the centers and pin before sewing each strip.
Trim and square up the block, if needed and you're done! I told you it was easy. :)
