This blog is turning into one that's all about sewing tote bags!
I stitched up this Amy Butler bag this week... and I'm going to sew a cute little cross body tote next week... Where will it end?
The fabrics I used for sewing my big beautiful bag are Amy Butler Bright Heart quilting cottons... and I love it. Guess what... you can sew one too because it was a kit. Get the pattern and fabrics all together from Craftsy (and they are on sale).
The pattern calls for plastic grommets for attaching the straps, but I substituted Extra Large Eyelets instead. (I've used those plastic ones before with less than favorable results... and I love the metal eyelets more anyway - did you see my Rope Handled Tote tutorial?)
There are pockets on the sides that are just right for holding 16 oz water bottles. So it's perfect for carrying everything I need at the soccer field when I take my kids to practice.
I also like to take my laptop along sometimes so I can get a little work done. The bag is much too big to be a laptop case, so...
I added a laptop pocket!
I knew from the start that I might might use this bag to carry my laptop, so I used Pellon Flex Foam instead of fusible fleece to stabilize it. It makes the sides more sturdy and protective. The Flex Foam was also perfect for my laptop pocket since it will cushion it against anything I might put in the rest of the bag.
If you want to make the same bag (with a laptop pocket too), grab a Garden on the Go Tote kit but don't sew it up until you read my tutorial for adding a laptop pocket to any tote bag pattern. :)
So, what have you been sewing up this week? Did you make something with one of my free sewing tutorials or patterns? I would love to see! Tag me on Instagram @sewcanshe.

Full disclosure: Craftsy provided this kit to me in exchange for a review. I wouldn't accept it if I didn't really want to sew it. :)
