Un-Tutorials are those sneaky pins that lead you to believe there's a tutorial behind them - and then there's not. Those kinds of pins are so common that I gave them a name and started a Pinterest board.
Now I'm asking you to help me pick one Un-Tutorial each month that I'll write a tutorial for. I adore a sewing challenge, so I know this will be fun. I chose three Un-Tutorials from our Pinterest board and its time for YOU to vote for which one I will sew.
Will it be...
This 'DIY Hostess Apron'? Okay, to be fair, this pin does lead to a quote, 'tutorial.' But I'm not sure that the person writing the 'tutorial' actually sewed the apron in the picture. For one thing, the terms are all wrong: a hem is called a border and pleats are called ruffles. And from what I can tell, all of the seams on the back are unfinished. Really? If this is the UnTutorial I sew up this month, I'm sure my 'tutorial' will be very different.
Next, I don't know how many times I have clicked on this little picture on Pinterest and always been bummed when the 'tutorial' isn't really a tutorial. So if you vote for this cute little bag I will make one and show you exactly how I did it.
Lastly... how about one last chance for an easy bird stuffie or pillow for Easter? These are adorable, the pin leads to a spam site, and I'd be willing to bet that the original picture came from a shop, not a blog.
Remember... whatever project wins, I'll be sewing my own knock-off version and then giving you a tutorial the week after that. So vote below for the project that you'd like to see me sew!
Next Wednesday voting will close and I'll announce the winner. Then I'll get started sewing it up. On the 3rd I'll share pictures of our finished project and on the 4th Wednesday I'll share a tutorial of my version.
And please come pin to our Un-Tutorials board! If you want, you can even grab pictures of things other places on the web or upload pictures you snapped from your phone (at Target, lol?). Leave me a comment with your email address at the bottom of this post so I can give you permission to add pins to our board. Be sure to read and follow the rules at the top of the Pinterest page.
I can't wait to see what I get to sew this month!
P.S.... Lots of people will assume I picked these projects because I couldn't find another tutorial for them. They will send me links to similar tutorials. Before you do that, read my opinion on the subject:
1. Everything that you see in pictures has been sewn before by someone and will continue to be sewn and written up again and again.
2. I'm writing this blog series mostly to have fun with my readers and to find out what they want me to write next - not really to write a tutorial for something that hasn't been written before (see #1).
3. Since pretty much everything has already been done before, what I enjoy most is seeing how other bloggers and designers put their own personality into a project.
I hope you do too and you decide to keep reading!
