This is not the way I had intended to show you my finished sewing room. It's pretty messy and I still have lots of organizing to do. But I am so so grateful that we are safe and dry after hurricane Matthew has passed!
I woke at 4 am yesterday morning to howling winds and pouring rain. Wind really does sound like howling when it's going at 90 mph.
The kitchen light that we had left on was out and the house was pitch black. That's how I knew there was no power. So I quietly picked up the flashlight that I had left next to my bed and walked through the house checking on each of our 4 kids. They were all sleeping soundly - having kicked off their quilts. Which was good because with the A/C off, I could feel the temperature in the house rising. Yes, here in central Florida we sometimes run the A/C year round.
Then I went back to bed. Unable to sleep I listened as trees nearby ripped apart. I heard something metal being dragged on the street outside and branches hitting our hurricane shutters, luckily nothing very large.
By 5 am the winds were subsiding. That's when I fell back to sleep. Later I woke up to kids jumping on our bed, excited about no school and no power. I asked my oldest son to run upstairs and check on my sewing room. No water intrusion - yay!
About noon, the winds were much less (although still tropical storm force - I was told later) so I went up to roll up the hurricane shutters on my sewing room windows. Light!
The rest of the house was still dark with the power out and bigger corrugated metal shutters on the windows that will be much more work to remove.
So I am counting my blessings this morning!
That my children and husband are safe and here for me to hold and love.
That Hurricane Matthew spared our home, the homes of family members nearby, and the homes of most of our friends.
That my sewing room is safe and dry - letting me keep sewing and making.
And that our power was miraculously restored by 1 pm on Friday - hallelujah!
Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers over the past few days. Your comments truly lifted me.
