I've been on such a hand embroidery binge lately... I think it's because I can pack my supplies in a bag and take them to the park, the pool, or even the dock while my kids are fishing. It's truly take-anywhere sewing, exactly what I need during the summer.
These embroidery designs were kind of inspired by the Tart colorway of Aurifloss that Fat Quarter Shop sent me. The colors are so delish! I had to design something just as yummy as the floss.
My his and her 'Have Your Cake' tea towels were made using my easy and free Fat Quarter Tea Towel tutorial. I cut my unbleached muslin fabric pieces a bit larger than the tutorial states - about 20'' x 22.'' I loved the selvages so much that I left them on to make a fringe like bottom edge.
After embroidering the designs, I sewed the towels on 3 sides only (like a pillowcase), turned them right side out, and then closed up the opening by hand with a running stitch all the way around using embroidery floss.
And here's a tip: I traced the design onto a sheet of Wash Away Stitch Stabilizer (alternatively, you can print directly to it) and adhered it to my fabric instead of tracing directly to the fabric. You don't have do do it this way, of course, but I love this product because it stabilizes the fabric as well and it comes off very easily with water.
Both of the his and her 'Have Your Cake' embroidery designs are available in my Craftsy shop as a .pdf download. I'm also offering the 'Piece of Strawberry Cake' design above as a freebie - in case you want to give it a try before buying the exorbitant $2 pattern, lol.
As you can see the designs are super fast and easy to sew, requiring only backstitching and sewing French knots. Perfect for taking on the go. If you sew them up, make sure you show me in one of our Show Off Saturday Linky Parties or in our SewCanShe Sewcialites facebook group - I love to see my designs sewn up by others!
