Summer sewing for me is less 'pleasure sewing' and more 'necessity sewing.' Take this bucket hat for example.
I really needed something to help me keep from sunburned while watching these kids play at the beach and pool. Turns out, they really like it too. It's reversible and we girls like the Amy Butler Lotus Polka Dots side while the boys like the Playful side (C+S canvas print by Melody Miller).
Best of all, the fabrics came from my stash and the pattern was free! Jen from Monkey See Monkey Do enlarged the free bucket hat pattern by Oliver + S for an adult. All I had to do was download her enlarged hat pattern and follow the instructions for the original child's hat.
This is not exactly an easy sew, but if you follow the directions exactly you'll be glad. The trick is to remember that most of the seams line up at the seam line, but not at the fabric edges (the seam line is 1/2'' away from the fabric edges). So clip where she tells you to and use lots of pins. Good luck!
Here's a hint: hand-sew the lining to the brim (like the instructions say). I tried twice to sew this last step with my sewing machine, both times with not-so-great results. After 2 un-pickings I decided to do as the pattern says and now it looks really cute.
And now it's time for our Show Off Saturday Linky Party! What have you been sewing up? Share a picture below.
Remember, if you decide to post your picture(s) online (like on facebook, flickr, or your blog) the linky page will let you enter a link to the page where it is so we can visit it. If it's not posted online yet, you may skip that part and upload a picture from your computer. We all can't wait to see!
Don't forget, the most clicked project will be spotlighted here next Friday - just like Teresa's London Backpack for Sweet Pea!
I would love it if you shared our linky party on your blog... here's a button to make it easy.
And don't forget to share the love and visit some of the other fun blogs in the party.
Please, no links to items for sale. Those links will be deleted. Thank you!
