Earlier this month Jacquelynne Steves emailed me and offered me the chance to get a head start on her new Cozy Afternoon free Block of the Month Quilt so I could show you. The block was so delightful, I couldn't refuse!
Here is my Block #1. You have the option of sewing the 5 center blocks with Applique, Hand Embroidery, or Piecing only. Although I love applique, I am currently in need of something to do during my kids' swim practices so I chose hand embroidery. And did I mention that every pattern of the BOM is free?
The embroidery version is all easy backstitching. I traced the design onto a sheet of Wash Away Stitch Stabilizer, adhered it to the front of some cotton/linen fabric from Cotton + Steel, and stitched it with 3 strands of a red and pink variegated embroidery floss.
As for fabric choices, I used the small floral print above left as my 'inspiration fabric.' The deep turquoise lantern print (from Laura Gunn) seemed a perfect match. Then I pulled out my fat quarter stash and narrowed down my other choices to the six on the above right.
I weeded out two more choices and think I found a sweet combination. Jacquelynne gives lots more colorway ideas for the Cozy Afternoon Quilt in this blog post too.
Now I simply can't wait for the next block to come out. How am I going to keep my hands busy during swim practice???
If you prefer, a kit that includes all of the fabrics for the Cozy Afternoon Quilt (including all the blocks, setting squares, triangles, applique and binding) is also available. My readers get to use coupon code 'SewCanShe2015' to get $10 off through June 30th.
In any event, make sure you sign up for the BOM to get the free block patterns!
