I had a back to school emergency last weekend. This guy stubbornly insisted that he was not going to start school on Monday and would not pick out a backpack at the store. I was too busy trying to get all the other things on my 4 lists (for 4 kids) that I forgot about Connor's backpack until Saturday afternoon. Loath to return to the store, I started looking at backpack patterns. I wanted something big enough for a 3-ring binder and more, a zipper opening instead of drawstring, and simple enough for a boy - no ruffles.
To the rescue... the Edelweiss Backpack from Sew Sweetness. I love Sara's patterns and was not surprised to see she had just what I needed. But I altered the pattern a bit - both to make it more boyish and to avoid another trip to the store. If you compare with the original pattern, you'll see that I left off the cute flap. It was just that. Too cute. Then I made it super boy chic (new term, lol) with black and gray cotton.
I substituted HeatnBond Fusible Fleece for the suggested stabilizer. I love HnB's fusible fleece because it is very easy to use and adds body without stiffness. Plus I already had it.
And I just happened to be out of strap adjusters (imagine that) so here's my late-night substitute... ghetto straps! They are even adjustable, he he. Only one person's opinion matters, and he thinks they are awesome.
I've taken up enough room, now it's your turn! Have you been sewing for back to school? Finally had time for some selfish sewing because the kids are out of the house? how us in our Show Off Saturday Linky Party.
So, what have you been sewing up this week? Did you make something with one of my free sewing tutorials or patterns? I would love to see! Tag me on Instagram @sewcanshe.
