The end of the year (or how I made ugly fabric cute)

I love these last few days of the year. School is out, there are no impending projects to be sewn, and with the new year about to start, procrastinating our normal tasks seems like the reasonable thing to do. Today our weather was great so we went to the park.

Earlier this month I went shopping at a big chain fabric store and took my girls along. I was only planning to pick up thread and elastic since I buy most of my fabric online, but my girls decided otherwise. They both swooned over this fabric that I must admit is a pretty color of blue, but it also has unicorns vomiting rainbows and glitter (yes, that's what comes to my mind).

So I emailed my friend over at Create Kids Couture to see if she would save the day. She sent me this darling top pattern and assured me it would look good with any fabric. It turns out I didn't buy quite enough of the unicorns vomiting rainbows and glitter to make two whole tops, so I mixed it with pink ruffle fabric for the sleeves. {Click here for CKC's Felicity Simple Peasant top pattern}

As you can see, the tops are a hit! I'm not sure where it would be appropriate to wear unicorns vomiting rainbows, but the park is a good start. Thank you, Create Kids Couture for saving this fabric!

What about you... enjoying the last few days of the year? Any tricks for sewing with fabric you don't love?
