I may be guilty of over-using pom poms lately... but I love my new family room curtains! This week I put the finishing touch on them - pom pom trim. Now I am in love.
I've been working on this room for months now. Let me show you the progression...
Our family room has inset windows that have cubby-like spaces underneath. My hubby thought that would be a good place to store out-dated stereo equipment and such. Hmmm....
Last month I decided to use the shelves for a Christmas Nativity and sewed floor to ceiling curtains to draw the whole space together.
So this is what it looked like over the holidays. But I still wasn't satisfied. The curtains turned out beautiful, I think (more about them in a minute), but they were just too formal looking.
So I added pom-poms (and took away the outdated stereo equipment).
Then I installed little hooks at the sides and used black ribbon for tie-backs. Perfect!
Of course you could achieve this look by sewing pom-pom trim on store-bought curtains or the ones you already have, but I couldn't find ready-made curtains the right length.
My inspiration came from the book Sewing Custom Curtains, Shades, and Top Treatments by Susan Woodcock and these pretty metal grommets from Rowley Company. The fabric was fabulous (and affordable) Faux Dupioni from Fabric.com.
I fell in love with the look of these box pleated curtains in the book, but they needed lots of fabric for the width. Thank goodness the fabric i picked was 120'' wide!
The grommets were really easy to install just like the video shows on the Rowley website. With just 2 confident strikes with a hammer (and using the EZ set tool) they are not coming out!
I really like Sewing Custom Curtains, Shades, and Top Treatments, by the way. There are inspiration books and magazines that show you beautiful rooms but not how to sew them, and then there are detailed how-to books that might not use fabrics you love, but they show you the nitty-gritty details. This book is the latter. It has very detailed how-to instructions for LOTS of different window treatments.
After hanging a quilt in my living room last week and finishing my family room curtains this week, I'm really getting hooked on home decor. I wonder what will be next?
But let's get on with our Show Off Saturday Picture Party... what have you been sewing up lately? Upload a picture below and show us!
