Are you on Pinterest? I am, I LOVE it! But I hate those sneaky pins that lead me to believe there's a tutorial behind them - and then there's not. Those kinds of pins are so common that I gave them a name: the Un-Tutorials. Then I started a Pinterest board where I could pin the cutest sewing un-tutorials and pick the best ones to write my own tutorials for.
Starting this month, I'm going to let you help me pick one Un-Tutorial each month that I'll write a tutorial for. I adore a sewing challenge, so I know this will be fun. I chose three Un-Tutorials from our Pinterest board and now YOU get to vote for which one I will sew.
Will it be...
the Bed Pockets? I followed link after link trying to find the source of this picture and got nowhere. A tutorial is definitely in order.
January is for organizing, right?
Or the Backpack to Messenger Bag and back again? Our reader-pinner Judy Manuel pinned this to the Un-Tutorials board and I think it's awesome. It would be so beautiful sewn up in coordinating quilting cottons (with plenty of stabilizer, of course). By the way, do you want to pin to the board too? Read how in this post.
Or maybe you will want to see my version of these adorable Chicken Pincushion/Bean Bags? Although this particular pin is an Un-Tutorial, I have seen different versions of these around the web. I think it would be a blast to put my own spin on them... and I have some red ric-rac that would make cute head combs and neck wattles, lol!
So what will it be? Next Wednesday voting will close and I'll announce the winner. Then I'll get started sewing it up and you can too if you want. On the 3rd Wednesday we can share pictures of our finished projects and on the 4th Wednesday I'll share a tutorial of my version.
Vote for your favorite Un-Tutorial below!
And hey, come see what else I'm Pinning too!
I scheduled this post for early this morning, and all day long people have been sending me emails with links to blog tutorials similar to the ones above. ALL DAY LONG! I can't respond to any more. So before you write me another email like that, please read my opinion on the topic:
1. All of the free tutorials online are derivations of something else out there - everything has been sewn before by someone and will continue to be sewn and written up again and again.
2. I'm writing this blog series mostly to have fun with my readers, to find out what they want me to write next - not really to write a tutorial for something that hasn't been written before (see #1).
3. Since pretty much everything has already been done before, what I enjoy most is seeing how other bloggers and designers put their own personality into a project.
I hope you do too and you decide to keep reading!
