I'm so excited to bring back Classic Blocks: Fresh Fabric tutorials and giveaways in 2016! If you remember, I started this blog series in 2014 and posted a total of 15 classic quilt block tutorials, each one with a fabric bundle giveaway. See all of the previous quilt block tutorials in this roundup.
This year we'll sew a total of 12 classic blocks using fresh new fabrics. They will look amazing! You can sew one block each month (to make into a sampler quilt at the end) or you can sew more than one... maybe enough for a quilt each month. It's up to you! To join the sewalong and enter to win the fabric bundle prize each month, all you have to make is one block.
A new Classic Blocks: Fresh Fabric tutorial and giveaway will post here on the first Monday of each month. :)
Well, let's start off 2016 with a fun and easy Bow Tie block tutorial and a beautiful bundle of fabrics to giveaway!
Bow tie blocks are often used in baby quilts, so I decided to use fabrics from the beautiful Faraway Forest Collection by Lizzie Mackay for Blend Fabrics. The winner of our Classic Blocks: Fresh Fabric sewalong this month will get this sweet little bundle that includes 8 fat quarters plus one 24'' long panel print. You'll be able to sew up a bunch of beautiful baby quilts with this!
To enter, simply sew a bow tie block (any size, in any fabrics) and upload a picture below. You do not need to have a blog or include a link to enter, just upload a picure to prove you made one. If you did blog about your block, feel free to link so we can read your post. :)
On the last day of January around 10pm Eastern I'll draw a winner randomly from among all of the entries. How easy is that?
So let's sew some easy bow tie quilt blocks!
Bow Tie Quilt Block Tutorial
These instructions are for an 8'' (finished) quilt block. Dimensions for a 12'' (finished) quilt block are provided in parentheses. All seam allowances are 1/4''.
From a print fabric, cut:
- 2 squares 4 1/2'' (6 1/2'')
- 2 squares 2 1/2'' (3 1/2'')
From a contrasting solid fabric, cut:
- 2 squares 4 1/2'' (6 1/2'')
1. Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of the smaller squares. Pin the smaller squares to the corners of the larger solid squares as shown above.
2. Sew along the line that you drew. Repeat on the other unit. Using scissors or a ruler and rotary cutter, cut away the corners of the sewn units 1/4'' past the sewn line.
3. Open and press.
4. Arrange the sewn units and the print squares as shown above and sew together.
Sew 2 rows first, and then sew the 2 rows together.
I love easy blocks like this one. I tend to make a whole bunch and then have fun arranging them into a quilt on my quilt design wall.
