A couple months ago my friend at Birch Fabrics (sold online through Fabricworm) contacted me about being a part of their huge Homestead release. I said 'Heck yeah!' I absolutely LOVE the high quality organic fabrics that they make and there isn't a Birch print that I don't love.
Homestead is a beautiful new collection by Emily Isabella (available in both poplin and knit) that is farm-y and sophisticated at the same time. Yes, that is possible. That luscious blackberry print on the leggings above is my favorite, but check out these others:
At first I had planned to make my Cadie a a little tunic with my Homestead print and the coordinating solid knit fabric, but when I got them in the mail I totally wanted to make leggings instead. Leggings are a staple in our house. My girls hate jeans, hate slacks, basically hate clothes that aren't uber comfortable. I've started to hate everything else but comfy leggings too, so it must be contagious.
So I'm working on a tutorial and pattern for basic girls' leggings in sizes 2-12 that I'll be releasing here on the SewCanShe blog very soon - I just have to get a few more things ready.
Did you make a guess earlier this week about which leggings were sewn on a sewing machine and which on a serger and coverstitch machine? Well, the solid leggings were the ones sewn on the sewing machine.
For all of you that guessed right, you'll get the pattern for free! All of you that guessed wrong will get the pattern for free too! Yes, I planned to give it to everyone all along. I just wanted to see if my regular-sewing-machine-made leggings could stand up to the picky seamstress test, and they did. :)
As I was saying before, Homestead is available in cotton poplin (a beautiful woven fabric great for quilts, apparel, home decor, and more) as well as cotton interlock knit. The interlock knit that I got to try (also available in a 58'' wide solid) is a true medium weight that's very soft and will work well on tee shirts, dresses, scarves, and of course, leggings.
To celebrate the release of this beautiful new fabric, Birch is giving away 1 yard of each print - either poplin or knit! Enter to win using the widget below. And for a second chance to win some Homestead fabric, I'm giving away a Fat Quarter bundle over on my giveaway page. These giveaways are totally separate so you can enter both - go do it!
