Can you believe how cute this bag is??? There are 2 sewalong projects each month in the Just For You Sewlebrity Sewalong, and the first one for January is the Sweetly Gathered Round Handbag.
Sherri of Thread Riding Hood is here to be our first Sewlebrity. Make sure you read to the end to find out how you can win a copy of Just For You and sewalong with us for a limited edition Sewlebrity button (picture below)!
Hi! I'm excited to be here on SewCanShe to write a bit about the Sweetly Gathered Round Handbag Pattern (written by Delia from Delia Creates). I can never have too many purses and totes, especially when they show off my favorite fabrics! So, when Caroline asked if I would be a part of this Sewalong, I didn't hesitate to say yes. I've thoroughly enjoyed the process and learned a thing or two as well. Before we talk about the bag, I'd like to say a few words about the e-book version of "Just for You". Having received this as my first e-book, I wasn't sure I would like it. I quickly discovered the ease of clicking directly to each pattern tutorial and being able to printing the pattern pieces, no tracing involved! I can see many more of these in my future!
The bag is super simple to construct and the instructions are well thought through. I love how detailed Delia is in the directions for the welt hidden pocket and the divided pocket - lots of room to organize in this bag - hurrah! If I had not delved into the world of fabric pattern matching it would have been finished within a couple of hours - cutting included. I am not certain why I pick plaids, or stripes so often, they present much longer cutting times. The handle instructions are simple as well. But, there is a bit of a learning curve and my second handle has much straighter stitching than the first. Good thing no one but me is looking so closely. I likely should have taken Delia's advice to practice first! Speaking of handles, I love that this pattern calls for you to make your own. Of course, you could buy them - but what fun is that? This way you can learn a new skill. And I found myself thinking about how many other projects I could use this knowledge on! Vinyl piping perhaps? Or just handles for miles? They are super comfortable, and I can imagine they will be very durable as well.
While searching my stash for the perfect fabric to use for the outside of the bag, I kept eyeing this DSQuilts navy plaid on white. But each time all I heard going through my head was - "It's white... and it's winter here... think of the mud!" The purse wouldn't last a day without spots - until I realized that I could add a vinyl base on it! Voila - a vinyl base to keep it from getting dirty and it even fit within the extra yardage needed for making the handles. If you want to add one to your bag, take a quick look at the photo below. 1) Cut the bag pattern piece 5" up from the bottom edge. 2) Add 1/2" to each of the edges you just cut for seam allowance 3) Cut out and sew the fabric and vinyl together with a 1/2" seam allowance 4) Press/Fold the seam allowance toward the vinyl and top-stitch it about 1/8" away from the edge. Continue on as instructed to finish the bag.
So - are you ready to sew up your own Sweetly Gathered Round Handbag? I get to give away a copy of the book! Come over and visit Thread Riding Hood for more about this bag and your chance to sign up to win "Just for You".
I'm looking forward to trying the other patterns in the book! Some are super practical, and some are just for fun - but I can see making quite a few of them. I'm especially excited about the Chevron shrug and Quilting Bee dress. So cute and useful! Thanks Caroline, for letting me be a part of the Sewlebrity Sewalong today. I'm going to be seeing a lot more of this bag in my future!
